#88 A Single Man (2009)

A great performance by Colin Firth playing a gay man through a single day in his life. He has lost his lover to a car accident and is planning on killing himself all day, but can't bring himself to do it or is interrupted by someone each time. Very stylized film with a unique look.

#87 The A-Team (2010)

An A-Team movie sounds like a bad idea on paper, but in execution with this cast it actually works out fine. It's funny and action packed from the start. Some jokes fall flat, but the action picks up fast enough to keep things moving and the bad parts are soon forgotten when they are 'flying' a tank and shooting UAVs at the same time. It's ridiculous to the nth degree.

#86 American Radical: The Trials of Norman Finkelstein (2009)

An amazing look into the life and career of Norman Finkelstein and the Israel Zionist lobby's attempt to discredit and crush him.

#85 Karate Kid (2010)

Karate Kid is a reboot no one asked for and many recognized as a cash cow to pay for Jaden's college fund. Going in I was prepared for it to be a terrible film attempting to appeal to our nostalgia and make younger kids think this is what Karate Kid is all about. It ended up being a solid film. We see him go through all the same situations as Daniel and train up to the final battle at a tournament. In parts they borrowed dialogue word-for-word from the original. This re-imagining holds its own, but I still prefer the original.

#84 Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

Hilarious time travel movie back to the 80s. I thought it was funny as hell. Not quite Hangover quality, but it's definitely up there with the best comedies of the last few years. It's raunchy and funny and not everyone will like it and that's just my style.

#83 I Love You Phillip Morris (2009)

A true story about a gay con-artist that escaped prison several times. A gay Catch Me If You Can, if you will. Great performance by Jim Carrey. Just when you think he's out of options he surprises you with another escape.

#82 Jennifer's Body (2009)

Another movie that surprised me. Went in expecting typical low budget, terrible story, horribly acted horror film and got something totally different. Jennifer is sacrificed by an indie rock band that wants to make a deal with the devil for success. Unfortunately, Jennifer wasn't a virgin which caused her to 'survive' and be taken over by a demon. Now she needs to eat humans periodically to stay strong and powerful. Her best friend, Amanda Seyfried, eventually uncovers the truth and is conflicted about killing her until her own boyfriend becomes the next snack.

#81 Splice (2010)

I was completely taken by surprise by Splice. I went in going by the trailers thinking it would be a by-the-numbers horror film about a science experiment gone wrong, and that part eventually came true, but the lead-up to all that was nothing anyone expected. Splice takes us places we weren't sure we wanted to go. It teeters on the edge of sanity and then jumps right off the cliff and goes all the way with it. I for one was impressed with the risks they took with Splice and enjoyed it more for shocking us every turn. It's hard to be surprised by a movie these days when so much is given away in the trailers and the fact that none of us were prepared for Splice made the ride all the greater.
